Manifestation of ‘Light and Energy’
This project is an exploration in Buddhism, and the chemical transformation of expired gelatin silver images. From the caves of Lascaux to digital icons, humans have delved into meaning from gestural drawings, symbols, and forms. The physical transformation allows expression that becomes a personal and meditative experience. As with Buddhist principles, I interpret the growth of self as expressed through Samsara: an everlasting cycle of life, death, the flow of energy into the cosmos, and rebirth, emulated in a series of chemical reactions on silver-gelatin paper surfaces. These are expressions of my own mortality, and how the interactions of recent family passings and tragedies reverberate throughout the human experience. My experience is not unique in the annals of time; however, as a person having reached mid-life, this life feels more real and present. Time is of the essence and this exploration is an expression of my human condition.
This portfolio began in late 2022 and continues to this day. Images are created on Fiber-Based Gelatin Silver Paper using Chromo halide-lift chemicals, developers, toners, and physical expression using hake brushes, time, and light manipulations. Renamed Chromatic Halide Lift, the mirror-like surface of the silver gelatin print is impossible to interpret in reproduction. All prints are 1 of 1 with no reproduction or reprints (and no NFT’s).
11x14 inch Gelatin Silver Fiber-Based Paper, archivally washed, and toned for longevity. Cold-mounted on acid-free Arches Cold-Pressed Paper for flush-mounted framing.
About Landau Gallery
LANDAU GALLERY is a miniature exhibition space that showcases photo-based art in 1:12 scale.* Our mission is to offer artists the opportunity to envision a one-person show of their work, free from ‘real world’ constraints.
The gallery exists in a beautiful light-filled space with white walls, bleached wood floors, and a sweeping skylight that illuminate the art inside. I work with Brooklyn-based architect Gregory Merryweather, to bring my idea of a dollhouse-sized gallery to life. He designed and built the model using wood and 3-D printing technology, adding details such as a radiator and skylight to further the illusion of reality.
In imagining my “ideal” gallery; place to exhibit new work, I found inspiration in the 1960’s furniture store owned by my parents, and later a bespoke home furnishings shop and gallery.
Both structures lead with a prominent portico, a shape reminiscent of Early American architecture (think Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello.) This triangular shape has lingered in my imagination as far back as I can remember.
The gallery is in its second year. Previous shows include Pamela Landau Connolly’s ‘Wishmaker’ series, Grace Weston’s ‘The Long Night’, Roxanne Lasky’s unEARTHed series of Chromatagrams, and Aline Smithson’s project ‘Child’s Play’ of paper dolls from the 1940w thru 70’s. Our upcoming exhibition of Frank Lopez’s original Chromatic Halide Lift images, ‘Manifestation of Light’. Going forward we will showcase 4-6 shows per year. We are interested in mid-career artists who work within the photographic medium.
